How to become a volunteer with PADS of Elgin

You can impact and support guests by volunteering to help within the shelter. As a volunteer you help guests feel welcome as well as help keep the shelter operating smoothly. Volunteer commitment allows the shelter staff to help guests find stability and safety within our walls. We have various types of volunteer positions available. For more information or if you have specific questions contact the office at 847-608-9744 during business hours.

Pre-Volunteer Checklist: 

  1. Download and fill out the PADS Volunteer Application (PDF) or visit our office during business hours to be provided an application.
  2. After completing the application please scan and email to our office manager at penny@padsofelgin.org or send application to our office at 1730 Berkley Street, Elgin, IL 60123.
  3. Once application has been received, PADS staff will run a basic background check on the individual applying. PADS staff will then contact you regarding your application and go over any questions or clarify any issues on the application itself. Please allow at least 48 hour for this to be done.
  4. Once cleared by a background check and all questions have been satisfied you will then meet with staff to understand your volunteer time commitment and needs, understand roles and responsibilities of volunteering at PADS and find out if volunteering would be a good fit for you and our organization.

Available Volunteer Positions

Night Time Volunteers 

Available Times: Every night, year round including holidays,  generally 6:30-8:30 pm

Time Commitment: At least 1x a month

Volunteers duties can include:

  • check in and welcome guests to shelter
  • distribute pads/ blankets,  shower or laundry supplies
  • occasionally assist serve dinner if needed
  • Make guests feel welcomed and safe

Day Time Volunteers

Available Times: Monday thru Friday, 9am to 4pm

Time Commitment: At least 1x a month

Volunteer duties can include:

  • cleaning various shelter spaces
  • organizing and putting away donations
  • assisting with laundering sheets and blankets (Tuesday & Thursday only)

Fundraising Volunteers

Available Times: Various

Time Commitment: Varies depending on fundraising or event needs

Volunteer duties can include:

  • Checking in guests at events
  • Helping assemble gift baskets for fundraisers
  • Assisting with decorating for various events
  • Soliciting donations from the community for fundraising events
